What a Typical Week in Animation at Francis Tuttle Will Be Like…

The first few days will be unusual because we have orientation, etc. So, let’s take a look at what a typical day and week will be like once we all get settled in…

READ carefully and make a note of any questions you have so we can discuss those in a little while.

Daily Schedule

Food isn’t allowed at your desks, but you can have a cup or water bottle with a lid. You will have a 15-minute break when you can eat a snack in the student break room or at a non-computer table in our area.

Morning/AM Students

  • Class Starts: 8:00
    • AM Break: 9:30 – 9:45
  • Class Ends: 10:55. High School students are dismissed at 10:45, however

Afternoon/PM Students

  • Class Starts: 12:30
    • PM Break: 2:00 – 2:15
  • Class Ends: 3:25

Each Day…

  1. You’ll sign in for class on the podium.
  2. Log in to your computer and then check Canvas to see if we have class announcements.
  3. Dig into your lessons and get lots accomplished!

Each Week…

While accomplishing the usual daily work, we’ll have some things to do that happen on different days of the week:

  • Weekdays, I’ll be visiting with each of you to see the work you did the week before.
  • Every day after break, 1 person takes the hot seat (a.k.a. the Comfy Chair) for 3 to 5 minutes and shows us something cool they did and something inspirational that someone else did. We’ll discuss how it was “emotioneered”.
  • Friday, Post something you’re working on in the Discussion board in Canvas Hub course. Then, toward end of class, we will play Kahoot — top 3 teams get Duck Bucks!

Where Things Are Around Campus!

Take a look at this map to see where some important things are… You can also find a link to this map under Other Destinations in the right-hand sidebar of this website.

What Is Animation All About?

Before we take a tour of our building and meet in the Blue Room, there are some tasks you need to complete so you can start thinking about animation as a career field… We will discuss this when we meet!

Task #1 — Thinking about Working in Animation

Please get out your own earbuds or borrow a pair of headphones from the countertop in our room. (You’ll be using headphones/earbuds a lot, so you’ll probably want to bring your own earbuds/headphones tomorrow.) Then, complete the following tasks. A little later, we will meet in The Blue Room to discuss what you learn…

Get ready to BE FEARLESS on your Quests in Animation this year at Francis Tuttle!

Watch this 2.5-min video excerpt from The Incredibles so that you will understand why we will not be issuing you a cape for your hero work here. As you watch, think about the decisions that the film makers made in order to create an entertaining scene. What elements make it entertaining? — It’s easier if you’ve seen this movie. Please tell me that you’ve seen it! 😉 If not, watch it some weekend soon! 🙂 … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R2aW03pwL0

Brad Bird wrote and directed The Incredibles. He also made Ratatouille and The Iron Giant. His passion for creating highly entertaining animation is evident — Watch this 1 minute video where he talks about getting into this field.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nEQax1iEaE

Movies aren’t the only things that animators work on! You can be an animator who works on commercials, training or educational videos, presentations, church materials, mobile apps, virtual or augmented reality experiences, or video games — to name a few possibilities. No matter what you do with animation though, you are creating an experience for other people to enjoy. People love a story! In this class, we will learn more about how to tell a visual story — fun stuff!

Speaking of what makes a great visual story… Someone put together this 5-min. video using Brad Bird’s thoughts/audio about what makes a great animated film… Watch it:

Can you believe that Brad Bird also did the voice for Edna Mode?

“Welcome to class, dahling!”

Task #2 — Stories You Like

If you didn’t already get one, get the Day 1&2 worksheet from the countertop and answer the questions on it. We will share these in a little while.

Let’s talk about what you like!

  1. What is a film or video game that you really admire?
  2. Who is the main character?
  3. What do you like about the main character? How did they make the character appealing?
  4. Does the main character have flaws or weaknesses?
  5. What does the character learn during his/her journey?
  6. What is the setting and environment like?
  7. What style was used in the set designs (settings)? (gritty, sleek, retro, modern, punk, 1950’s, minimalist, post-apocalyptic, etc.)

Task #3 — Get Set Up in Canvas

Raise your hand and show your completed sheet to Ms. Harris and ask her for your Canvas login details…
